Anthony Hecht
1923-2004
Anthony Hecht’s first book of poems, A Summoning of Stones, appeared in 1954. It was followed by The Hard Hours, which received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1968. In 1990 Hecht published his Collected Earlier Poems, a book composed of several of Hecht’s early collections of poems. He is also the author of several books of criticism. He has taught widely, most recently as University Professor in the Graduate School of Georgetown University, from which he recently retired. He lives in Washington, DC.
