Gary Snyder
1930-
Gary Snyder has published numerous volumes of poetry and prose, including Turtle Island, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1975. No Nature, a volume of selected poetry, was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1992. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. As a professor of English on the faculty at the University of California at Davis, he has been instrumental in starting the Nature and Culture Program. Since 1970 he has lived with his family in the watershed of the South Yuba River in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Northern California. This river and these mountains have served as a base from which to travel and teach worldwide.
